Using a blood pressure (BP) monitor correctly ensures accurate readings. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Preparation
Rest for 5 minutes before measuring.
Avoid caffeine, smoking, and exercise at least 30 minutes before.
Sit comfortably with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
Place your arm at heart level on a table or armrest.
Keep calm and quiet (avoid talking or moving). - Positioning the Cuff
Bare your arm (don’t measure over clothing).
Wrap the cuff around your upper arm (1 inch above the elbow).
The tubing should align with your artery (usually marked on the cuff).
The cuff should be snug but not too tight (you should fit two fingers under it). - Taking the Measurement
Turn on the BP monitor.
Stay still and silent while the device inflates and deflates.
Wait for the reading to appear on the screen (Systolic/Diastolic & Pulse).
Record the results if needed. - Tips for Accuracy
Take readings at the same time each day.
Measure twice, 1-2 minutes apart, and average the results.
If using a wrist BP monitor, keep your wrist at heart level.
